Sedation Dentistry in Red Deer
Are you losing sleep and cancelling your dental appointments? Have you not made a dental appointment for years because you had a bad experience with the dentist before? At Healthy Smiles, it is our goal to help overcome your nerves. We know some of you would prefer to relax and drift off to sleep and wake up with all your treatment done.
We’ll do everything we can to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable when they visit us. We’ll be happy to talk to you about your concerns, work at your pace, and give you breaks when needed. For your entertainment and comfort, we have televisions in every room for our patients. We know dental anxiety is a common condition and understand patients will want us to help them feel at ease.
We offer inhalation nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, or a combination of both. If you are interested in sedation or if you are looking for solutions for dental anxiety, request an appointment with us and we can discuss the right option for you.

Anxious to see the Dentist?
If you have been losing sleep, or putting off seeing the dentist, please give us a call @ 403-986-8000 or request an appointment online and we can discuss sedation options to help you with your dental visits.
Laughing Gas
Inhalation nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through the nose. The medication helps calm and relax patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. In addition to reducing anxiety, laughing gas can also reduce your pain sensation, reduce your gag reflex, and make time pass more quickly. Patients who are treated with laughing gas can drive themselves to and from our office for their dental procedure.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill one hour prior to your dental appointment. Depending on your specific case, the medication may also be prescribed for the night before.
Once you arrive, you will be allowed to rest comfortably in a warm, quiet room. We will provide you a cozy blanket. Throughout your appointment, you will be closely monitored to ensure your safety.
You will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment. It is not uncommon to feel sedated again a few hours after your dental appointment. Although the dental “freezing” (the numbing from local anesthetic) may wear off after 4 hours, the sedation medication may last up to 24 hours in your body. Plan to take the rest of the day off to stay home. You must not drive or operate any machinery, and avoid making any important decisions (e.g. sign a legal document) for this period of time.
